Independent Service Reflection
Will these experiences change the way you act or think in the future?
The experiences from the independent hours I did help change the way I think because now I am more patience with people. Before I had a short fuse but now I listen and wait more, instead of being in a rush.
How does this experience compliment or contrast with what you do in class
This experience compliments what I do in class because in class such as science I rush to do everything, instead of taking time. I sometimes don’t listen to all instrution. Now listen because I realized I’m missing out on key direction.
What are three big issues that create problems that our service is trying to address?
One issue my groups faced were the schedule for next year, how to do the sign up sheets for the tutoring , and who are going to tutor the students next year.

Self Rubic
For Listening I deserve a 4. For attendance I deserve a 3 because I missed one day. For reflection I deserve a 3 I did all the blogs and some extra credit. For participation I deserve a 4 because I took my personal time to get the stuff to sell for 3 weeks as our fundraiser. For preparation I also deserve a 4 because I keep check of the money and what materials we would buy for the next week.

May 28 Service Learning Group
For the last service learning meeting my group discussed how we are going to organize the tutoring program for next year. We also added up the money we made so far and it was $86.00 almost $90.00 We also discussed who out of our group would be tutoring next year. The one problem that came up was if we use a board for signing up then the students may vandialize the board. The last week we will dicuss the possibilty of different materials to use for the sign up sheets..

My individuial hours
For my individual hours I did all the work for the school. I gave out tours to prospective students for the incoming school years. I sold candy to raise money for the garden group with Mrs. Thompson. Then for my tutoring group I went outside of school and brought stuff to school to sell and raise money.

Sevice learning meeting
For the week of May, 19th we had a very good service learning meeting. For our meeting we came up with 3 good titles to lead our fundraising ideas. Our tiles are pretzel sticks for math tips, lollipops for learning, and cookies for calculators. M .M gave me the money to start up the pretzels. Once we make the money we will pay back the money we owe the Ms.M.
Some moments we had problems were with Kris trying to talk over and act like the boss. Once we all began to work as a group our problems were resolved. Some of our group moments were when we sat down and began to work hard. This week I think was one of our most productive weeks. With us losing week don't think it will rally hurt us as far as work but we will miss each others company.

Super delegates
Super delegates are current & former leaders in the Democratic party. Super delegates are not regular voters. Delegates are appointed by statewide votes aquired by a candiaite. The rest are appointed by congressional districts. This electiont here will be 796 delegates. Many think that these delegates can make or braek Hilary Clinton. I belive Obama has more popular vote than Hilary. If she gets enough delegates she can get the nomination. Some pros of super delegates ids that if not enough votes are casted the delegates can make up for the lost in vote Which means no one outside of the party can vote for the Democratic So cons are that if the super delegates cast their vote before the caucus or the primary voters have reached a clear verdict some predict that Democratic risk losing the trust of voters.
5th service Learning Meeting
At this service learning meeting our group began tally up the results of the surveys. We also discussed the possibility of a fundrasier to raise money for supplies for next year. Dorien jackson tallied the final numbers but we all insisted in helping. This week I to present my idea of going to Bj's and then one day of the week sell. Tis money could buy pencils, rulers, snacks etc. Another idea that was discussed was the possibilty of getting a extra room in the school made into the tutoring room.

4th service Learning Project
Yeserday at my service learning meeting we revised our survey because after analyzing the data we realized that some students didn't understand that they were supposed to number instead of check. This showed us that instead we should change it into please check off your top three diffucult subjects. We then decided to meet in Ms.Mcmullun room after homeroom today to redistrbute the new surveys. Next week we will gather all the info then began making charts to analyze the data.

Lincoln Vs. Obama extra credit
To me Lincoln & Obama to me are very similar. They both have views similar to equal rights and are open to say them. Obama has came out and openly talked about the civil rights movement of the 1950's - 1960's. to contrast their two speeches I would have to say that lincoln's speech about the Dred Scott case which I have intense knowledege on because that was my NHD project was a big turning point. Lincoln used to the Constitution as his window to back up his claims and interpret our founding fathers. Obama also a lawyer for the Harvard law review used to the Constitution as his window to. also i belive if Lincoln could win through all the convestries going on the Obama has a chance . But it seems as though history is repeating its self.

Service learning Meeting 3
For this service learning meeting I was absent. But I talked to a follow student of my group & Ms. Mc Mullun who informed me that the survey was finalized & will be put out tomorrow. Also this week we will be putting together a schedule for people who will be tutoring next year. Also get together all the teachers who said they think tutoring is needed and then organize the schedule. I think the role I was like to take on is the role of the recorder i feel like I can keep detailed notes for everything.

2nd service learning
At this service learning we discussed the possibility of going to other schools and in house tutoring. Independece Charter is moving and we need a new school. We also composed the survey for students & staff that asks such questions as do they want to be tutored by someone of their grade or younger etc. We then began typing the surveys so we can get them out. Overall the meeting went very good.

First service Learning
At the first service learning meeting for the tutoring we discussed the chances of going to to Indepedence Charter school that the last year tutoring group went to. Ms. McMillian also decided that for next week we will each write a letter asking each school for permission. We are also to research a local school that is in walking distance if we want to go & tutor their students. Overall we got a lot of work done . After I researched I decided that most Philadelphia students are lacking in math & science. Since we are a history high school we may also want to tutor in history .

The African American Cultural connection
For the African American Project I decided to to a connection to spoken word. Through my research I figured out the spoken word had a connection to folklore , and language and religion. I decided to use poem by Phillis Whealty a fomer slave. I wrote the commact essay on her poem" Address to the Diest". I then recited my poem and explained the connections.
Service Learning Ideas
For service learning i decided to research local schools that have not AYP. AYP is Annual Yearly Progress and whoare which in walking distance. These schools will in need of extra help for students.I was thinking that we could tutor in math & science since thoseare the subjects where philadelphia school students have problems the most. I was thinking Mc Call .

The Presidental Election
The presidental election to me is based on the race card. I feel that the voters and common people are making it seem as if race should decide who you vote. Obama has good goals but I don't know if he will follow through. Hilary clinton has the experince of having a husband who was already in office. but I fear that she may come with his baggage. There has been talk that Bill Clinton had made a agreement with the middle east while in office. Also I wonder if Hilary will let her husband influnece her. Although bill Clinton was a good president. Obama speech on race and religion shocked me. He spoke out about how people say he's not black enough . He told his story and didn't care. He stood up and didn't care about the reactions. Church is supposed o be separeted from state. I like both of them But I like Clinton better.

The NHD was a good experience but I believe that it should only be mandatory for 9 & 10 graders. I learned important skills for college such as annotated bibliography and how to research. One thing I could have done better is to use the workshops to my advantage instead of wasting time but overall it was a good experience. Some changes for next year would be to have more teachers in the workshops instead of one. I would also suggest staring earlier so the research cam is more centered and detailed. The annotated bibliography should have more sources than 30. Also a person that is an English professor should be brought in more often. Also exhibts should be more mathacally accurate and spaced because the winners have more than 30 sources and have more better looking projects than us. I also feel like it is a shame because we should be winning and we devote all is time for nothing. But overall the researching and going to the historical sites are showing we are devoted.

Letter to mr. romero
Dear Mr. Romero,
I believe I deserve an A+ or a 100 because I have worked hard for the second semester. I completed all 36 questions, read the whole Huckberry Finn book, and I posted and blogged all my required essays & stories.
The task of writing 2 questions for each level for conflict, characters, and setting was a creuling one. It was more thinking about what you learned then just looking in the book. It was necessary to read the book. I deserve an A+
because I completed this large task and turned it in on Friday, Jan. 3.
The Adventures of Huckberry Finn was a required reading for this marking period. I believe it was about 27 chapters. Though I lost touch, and focus as I read on it grasped my attention until the end. The setting & time was back in the day and nowadays children really don’t like to read that stuff. I read beginning to end not missing a page and connected it to my 36 questions.
Blogger, COM, and Storywrite.com were an online publishing for the 9th grade. Each essay on blogger. Com is completed, and my narrative on storywrite.com is published &* I wrote many comments. I have met all the deadlines too.
To conclude my letter I believe I deserve an A+ or a 100 because I have done everything required & more. Such as the 36 questions, reading Huckberry Finn, and published 7 blogged all essays & stories.
Sincerly, Khalia thompson

Biography
Phillis Wheatley was a famous African American slave born in Africa most likely in Senegal in the early 1750s. Phillis was kidnapped at age five or six and taken to Boston in a salve ship. In 1761 Phillis was sold to John Wheatley who was a merchant. Philis was a favorite out of the slaves and was allowed to learn to read & write in 1761 is when she began writing.
Phillis is famously known for her poem” On the Death of their Reverend Mr. George Whitefield was published in 1770. Granted her freedom in 1773 the Wheatlys sent Phillis to London to recieve medical care. There she met Benjamin Franklin & other notable figures. In London she began known as “ Sable Muse”. While in London she published “ Poems on various subjects, and Religious and Mural”. She returned to Boston in 1773. During the pre-Revolutionary period she wrote poems and supporting the American cause her famous poem to George Washington not her invite to visit him at the Continental army Camp. In 1778 she married a free black. Her luck began to incline. One of her jobs was cleaning a lodging house. Two of her three children died. She died later that year. She is also famously known for her poem “One being brought from Africa to America.”
Did Phillis Wheatly really write for the whites or was it the black struggle in converted form? This is a topic many have touched upon. Phillis thought was treated good was still a slave. Many whites beloved her to be a faithful & good servant. Though don’t you see her pain & disbeleaf of being a slave in her poems? Its impact today is now historians can see the feelings of a slave and try to analyze why she felt that way. Even through many whites didn’t understanding they were blind to the truth. Phillis made a good life on the outside but a bad emotional life inside. Her heartbreak & pain caused her to die at a young age.
